Chinese Placement Test

NOTE 1: You do not need to sign in or use any menu items outside of this page. Just do the test here.

NOTE 2 : It is essential that you read the directions closely.
This test has four parts: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Please start by filling out the background survey below, then continue on down the page. Read the instructions for each part carefully. The entire assessment should take no more than 1 hour, as follows:

Reading: 20 minutes; Speaking: 10 minutes; Listening 10 minutes; Writing; 20 minutes.
Note: This is an assessment of your proficiency in Chinese; it is not an achievement test. This test is designed to help place you in the most appropriate class. You should do your best; neither more nor less than your best. Any sort of help, guidance, hints, use of dictionaries or other tools will only hinder correct placement. Answer what you know; skip what you don't. Intelligent guesses are fine, but wild guesses are not.



Reading Assessment


Note: You only need read one of the following selections. If you can read the first one, you should skip the second two. If you cannot read the first, go on to the second. If you can read that, you should only read the second and skip the third. If you cannot read the first or second, please go on to the third.

Speaking Assessment


1) Click on the Allow" button to enable your microphone and camera, then enter your full name and click on Login.

2) Once it says "connected" you can begin.

3) To start, click on the Realtime icon. You will see/hear a question and then you will have 20 seconds to reply. You can press the Stop recording button , or just wait until the 20 seconds are up. Then you will hear the next question, and so on. There are 12 questions. If you do not understand a question, just click on Stop recording and go onto the next question.

4) When you are done, press the Submit icon to finish.

Listening Assessment

Note: You only need listen to one of the following selections. If you can understand the first one, you may skip the second two. If you cannot understand the first, go on to the second. If you can understand that, you may skip the third. If you cannot understand the first and second, please go on to the third.

Answer the questions based on what you hear. Each recording is played twice; the first time without any breaks; the second with breaks built in. You may take notes on a piece of paper as you listen. Read the questions for each before you listen. The questions for each recording are underneath it.
















Writing Assessment


On a separate piece of paper, please handwrite two essays. Each essay should be at least 10 sentences long and should demonstrate your ability to express yourself in written Chinese. Do not use any aids when you write. If you forget how to write a character, use the pinyin.
1) Introduce yourself to us in Chinese. Tell us all about your self and your family; your hobbies, school, friends, travel, and your experience learning Chinese.
2) If you could travel anywhere, tell us where you would go, what you would do there, who you would go with and how you would get there. Why would you chose that place? Have you been there before? Would it be fun? If so, why? If not, why not?
